Managing R&D Type Project - By Mah Kong Howe
Research and development, new product development, product introduction, etc., are all types of projects that have special needs that the so-called 'ordinary' projects do not possess. Generally perceived to be 'more difficult' and harder to control, these types of projects do present some serious challenges to the project managers and team leaders. Senior managers are also concerned as these higher levels of uncertainty translate into greater risks and less control over their business strategies.

This talk will trace some of these concerns to the principles of project management via a basic 5-Step Model of Project Management. Although this model may be used as a generic foundation for all projects of varying levels of complexity, it will be used as a focal point for the talk's discussion. Participants will be encouraged to relate the model to their project experiences.
